Paul is one of the longest-standing team members at Asckey, joining as a Software Developer in 2002.
Paul joined Asckey directly from university. During vacations, he worked for a software company writing software catalogue components for airplanes.
He is now the Senior Software Developer and is primarily focused on the development and maintenance of EFM-information. This is a web-based data collection product that has seen many changes over the years as web technology has progressed.
Paul has always been into computers as you can read below.
What made you go into programming?
I’ve always been interested in computers and playing with technology, and I found programming as a career path fit my interests. There’s always something new to learn and a clever way of doing it.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I like that the products we write really do make a difference to hospitals and the wider running of the NHS. The information we collect on behalf of our clients is used to make key decisions.
There’s an element of pride that our small part has affected the wider community, most likely without the general public even realising it.
I also get to play with computers of all shapes and sizes and call it ‘work’.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Something that made me proud was having developed techniques that simplify the boiler-plate code required to query a backend database, complete with accompanying helper functions, being recognised by the developers of the main development platform we used and incorporating my techniques directly into their main product. I think that having fellow developers seeking out and adopting your work because they see value in it and want it to be more widely available is quite an accolade.
What do you like to do away from work?
I have always liked live music and seeing bands. I was an unofficial roadie for my brother during our teen years and consequently, I love going to festivals with my wife and daughter.
Where has been your best holiday destination?
I have to say Venice, right? We went there on our honeymoon and visited again 5 years later.
Are you a tea or coffee person?
Coffee. Black.
